Joe Burrow runs for a TD and the Bengals’ defense carries them past the Giants, 17-7

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. (AP) — Joe Burrow delivered a crucial performance, and the much-criticized Bengals defense rose to the occasion, securing a vital victory that brings Cincinnati renewed hope after a rocky start to the season.

Burrow showcased his agility with a career-best 47-yard touchdown run on the opening drive. Chase Brown sealed the game with a 30-yard touchdown run, just moments after his fumble fortuitously rolled out of bounds, leading to a 17-7 win over the New York Giants on Sunday night.

“This win was essential for us,” Burrow reflected after the Bengals improved to 2-4. “I wouldn’t say we would have been completely out of it with a loss, but it would have made things much tougher. We’re still fighting, but it feels great to get a win. It was fantastic to see our defense perform like that, especially after some tough weeks. They were outstanding tonight.”

Evan McPherson connected on a go-ahead 37-yard field goal in the third quarter, bouncing back after a mishap with a snap and hold had led to a missed potential game-winner the previous week.

For the Giants (2-4), rookie Tyrone Tracy rushed for a 1-yard touchdown. However, New York remains winless at home after three games, managing to score only one touchdown during that stretch. They were unable to capitalize on a Bengals defense that entered the game ranked 31st in the league in scoring.

The Giants punted four times in the first half. In the second half, they turned the ball over on downs twice, while Greg Joseph missed two field goal attempts.

The high-powered Bengals were looking to bounce back after a heartbreaking 41-38 overtime loss to the Baltimore Ravens, marking their second defeat this season in which Burrow and the offense scored over 30 points. McPherson’s earlier missed kick played a role in that loss, but the Bengals also struggled to contain Lamar Jackson and the Ravens’ offense.
