Texas Supreme Court orders last-minute stay of execution for Robert Roberson

The Texas Supreme Court recently issued a last-minute stay of execution for Robert Roberson, who was scheduled to be executed on October 17, 2024. His case, tied to the controversial “shaken baby syndrome” diagnosis, has sparked debate over the validity of the forensic evidence used in his conviction. Roberson was sentenced to death in 2003 for allegedly causing the death of his two-year-old daughter, Nikki Curtis. However, medical experts and legal advocates argue that the scientific basis for “shaken baby syndrome” has been discredited over the years.

The stay of execution allows more time for Roberson’s case to be reviewed, especially in light of claims that his conviction was based on flawed scientific testimony. Supporters, including scientists and even some of the original law enforcement personnel involved in his case, have raised doubts about the fairness of his trial, with some suggesting that his autism and the use of junk science may have hindered a just outcome. Roberson’s case is one of many that highlight ongoing concerns about wrongful convictions linked to outdated forensic methods
